Wisconsin Tai Chi Academy offers a number of different workshops designed to explore concepts and practices of traditional Tai Chi, Qigong, and related topics in more depth. All workshops are open to current students and many are open to the general public.

Attendance will generally be limited due to the venue size and people wanting to attend are encouraged to register early.

Ba Fa Wu Bu Tai Chi Form – Beginner

Description:

Ba Fa (Eight Methods) and Wu Bu (Five Steps) represent the Thirteen Postures (Shi San Shi) of taijiquan, and are the foundation movements which have guided the development of all Tai Chi.

The Ba Fa Wu Bu Tai Chi Form (also known as the new Simplified Form, or Eight Methods and Five Steps Form) represents the latest attempt to find a simplified way to introduce people to Tai Chi. It was developed by the National Sports Administration in China in response to the call for a new standardized fitness routine that could be easily taught and practiced by people of all ages.

In this workshop participants will be introduced to the full Ba Fa Wu Bu Form. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and does not require any previous knowledge of Tai Chi. It serves both as a great introduction for those new to Tai Chi, as well as an opportunity for those with Tai Chi experience to enhance their skills.

Participants are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring water or any other essential items they require. A list of movements and a Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to all participants upon completion of the workshop.

Fee: $50 (current WTCA student) / $60 (non-WTCA student)

Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong

Introduction to Taijiquan Push Hands

Date and Time: Saturday April 12, 2025 at 10:00am (1 hour)

Prerequisite(s): Either a current WTCA student, or demonstrated knowledge of other Tai Chi (taijiquan) set(s).

Description:

Taijiquan push hands (sometimes referred to as sticky or sticking hands) is considered a fundamental element of understanding the application of taijiquan techniques, and taijiquan as a martial art. It involves developing physical sensitivity through exploring feeling/listening jing and understanding jing, and from there being able to apply this sensitivity to techniques for self defense. Understanding and practicing push hands enhances one’s understanding of Tai Chi movements and, even without martial application, can improve performance of various Tai Chi sets.

In this workshop students will be introduced to introductory concepts, including:

  • light touch and relaxation, to enhance sensitivity;
  • developing feeling/listening jing and understanding jing;
  • application of Yin (yielding) and Yang (advancing) in push hands an Tai Chi in general;
  • a basic two-person set to be able to practice these skills.

Some prior knowledge of and experience with Tai Chi is necessary before attending this workshop.

Lotus Qigong Set

Description:

Qigong – “to work the qi” is an ancient practice of internal exercises used for everything from promoting relaxation to improving strength, flexibility and the circulation of qi within the body. This workshop will teach the Lotus Qigong set of Qigong exercises. This set is easy to learn and perform and suitable for everyone to learn. Participants will learn the full set of exercises. Those who already have experience with the Lotus Qigong set will have the opportunity to refine and deepen their understanding of the set.

Participants are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring water or any other essential items they require. Handouts related to the material covered will be provided.

Tai Chi Fundamentals Wu Bu and Ba Fa I

Whether you’re new to Tai Chi or an experienced student, our Wu Bu and Ba Fa workshops will help you develop your fundamental skills and understanding of the Thirteen Postures, and enhance your Tai Chi practice.

Taijiquan Martial Applications I

Prerequisite(s): Current WTCA student with at least one completed term of Beijing 24 Forms, or equivalent knowledge/experience if non-WTCA student.

Description:

The Martial Applications workshops are designed for the student interested in learning the martial aspect of their Tai Chi in more depth. This is relevant for all those wanting to understand taijiquan as a martial art, or those who simply want to understand and improve their Tai Chi forms.

The Level I course will focus on applications from the following forms from Beijing 24 Forms:

  • Commencing Form
  • Part the Wild Horse’s Mane
  • Brush Knee and Twist Step

Participants are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring water or any other essential items they require. Handouts related to the material covered will be provided.

Please note: this is a “light contact” event and participants will be practicing self-defense skills. Every measure is taken to ensure each participant’s safety, however there is an inherrent risk in practicing any form of martial art. Participant’s attending this workshop acknowledge that they do so at their own risk.
